On the Seine, Paris

On the Seine, Paris

I wanted to see how well my travel sketches convert to a painting. So I took the ‘Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and the Seine’ drawing and began an acrylic. This is on gessoed 300gsm paper. I still have a few of these to use, and as I didn’t know what I was doing, seemed safer to go this way.

Began with a charcoal indication of where the main areas should be.Decided then to base the colours pretty much on the simplicity of the watercolours in the original line sketch. I didn’t even wish to go back to any photo reference. No no, I would wing this and make it up as I went along.

Today would be the third day I’ve worked on it and it’s nearing completion. I’ll be away for a week so on my return I’ll know immediately if it’s done or not. What I’m enjoying is feeling my way as I go. No sense of panic has gripped me so far, so just kept going. Everything should be a bit loose and shapes as they turn out. C’est la vie.

  1. I enjoy the helpful info you offer in your articles. I will bookmark your web site and have my children check up here often. I am quite sure they will learn lots of new stuff here than anybody else! My best regards, Stacey.
