Sunday Sketching. Manly Arts Festival. Sep 16.

Sunday Sept 16. Mixed Flower set up

What a fabulous day it was for Manly Arts Festival’s first Sunday of sketching.  Perfect blue and no wind. Well that came later in the day.

We had 2 flower settings, both different in colour and the style. Everyone took a moment to take a good hard look at the thing as a whole, then decided where the centre was, to get that in the centre of your page – if possible. That’s not easy when you haven’t sketched before, but everyone did.

Once the sketch was down, we used watercolour pencils and waterbrush over our layers of colour. Lydia used watercolours because she’s used them before. As you can see, all the sketches were quite different but all captured the freshness of the blooms.

Then it was time for street sketching. There are some lovely gates, letterboxes and steps all the way down James St, and everyone found something that appealed. Not many would have thought they’d be sitting on a pavement or roadway to sketch, but when you spotted your subject none of that matters. Just anywhere will do.

Once at the cafe, and seated in a sunny spot, with a view to Manly Cove beach, we could order coffee and eats. Then we could settle to do a new sketch or colour a previous one.

There was quite a choice of sketches to photograph and everyone had more than one to decide on. Subjects ranged from letterboxes, steps, coffee cups, palm trees gates and turrets.

A whole lot of fun and some great sketches. Congrats to all.

Roll on next Sunday.
