Sunny and chirpy. That’s how everyone felt when they arrived.

Nothing scary on the tables.

Unless cacti are scary!

A cute trio of Mexican red and yellow cacti with tiny wee prickles that wouldn’t hurt a flea.

Sitting with a fat dove garden ornament.

Other table. Nice square bowl of succulents. A pot of round leafed ones with delicate pink florets.

We still have to watch the elipses. Round things don’t have pointed corners.

Very cheerful sketches from everyone today.

Next destination was Rambling Rose Floral Atlier on a beautifully sunny corner of the Manly Walk Arcade, with a very smart black and white awning over the windows.

This sketch could be from outside, inside or vignettes. Anywhere that summed up the feeling of the subject for you.

The sketches covered all of these.

Colour and aroma makes us feel quite wonderful and the sketches reflect that.

Then to satisfy our taste senses, along the Arcade to Belgian Waffle Cafe.

A warm waffle with maple, sugar and a touch of ice cream perhaps?

Some did and some chose a delicious Lentil chickpea and veg soup.

Thank goodness there was a choice for those of us with waistline issues!

Accompanied by an excellent coffee from the Lamborghine Yellow espresso machine.

FRIDAY AUGUST 16 ’13

Margaret was back after several weeks travelling. She had some wonderful sketches done while at airports, on Safari, in Middle Eastern villages and the many other places she’d been.

Somehow her sketching today was quick and loose. So something magic has happened!

The succulents and cacti went down well and the sketches you’ll see certainly show that.

Rambling Rose was looking lovely today. The colour and aroma as we entered was gorgeous.

We needed to warn Beryl that we sketchers were about to invade.

Meanwhile, it was interesting to work out what all the noise was over on the Corso.

Memorial Day for Vietnam.

I spoke to one very proud gentleman, wearing his medals and leaning on his cane. They like to do it on a day when the school children can attend.

This helps the next generation to get a taste of some living history.

By the time lunch was getting close, there were some really lovely sketches happening, all summing up the essence of a flower shop.

Along to Belgian Waffle Cafe to take a seat anywhere one was comfortable. Most completed their flower shop ones.

Only a couple of lunch sketches happened, so I’ll be sure tomorrow’s people sketch first, eat next.

Sketching before eating. But sometimes we forget.

SATURDAY AUGUST 17 ’13

Today was an important day.

Alissa was coming to share her ‘Travel Sketchbook Thoughts’ with us.

Having recently returned from Urban Sketchers Symposium in Barcelona, plus some time in London, we’d invited her to show us her wonderful Travel Sketchbooks and tell how she plans her pages and what will go on them.

The fascination for the class was often the quirky little side sketches and the writing of her thoughts about that moment.

Alissa will often place a simple map sketch in the corner of a page, with where she was, and where she went.

There will be full on sketches and fine quick line ones on the same page, and wording linking the story.

A plan of the hotel room, a bus ticket, an airport lounge, the wrapper of an ice cream, the new shirt, and so on.

A wonderfully personal visual record of her days and events during that time.

Of course as she does, Alissa was also now working on today’s sketches –  of sketching with us. This is now on her website, starting with the ferry ride to Manly and home again at the end of the day. All in sketches.

So for us today we would also create our own sketch journal of todays events.

Off to Rambling Rose, and again choose one or several sketches, with headings and notes to be added.

These were such a delight, and people were definitely looking for the quirky little things that may have gone unnoticed, but when sketched became so very personal.

Belgian waffles tempted us along the arcade, and it worked very well to take all the outside tables, where we could share our ideas, and still watch as Alissa as she sketched Therese’s Strawberry waffle confection.

Alissa only uses watercolour pencils, but differently from us.

Quite a few sketched their food or each other as part of a wonderfully inspiring day, sharing and learning from someone who is so passionate about Travelling with her Sketchbook.

We are lucky to have her returning again next Saturday. Do let me know if you’d like to be there.
