Oooh a chilly day. Blue skies for a while, but warm clothes the order of the day.
But our subject for this week is very special and brings sunshiny smiles.
One of our sketcher girls has turned 70. So to celebrate every class will be sketching birthday cakes and tarts.
We won’t see Birthday Barb till tomorrow but at least everyone this week can share the fun in advance. Sketching only of course. No nibbling! Yet.
You’ll see some very edible and delicate colours used today and all the sketches, so very different, looked great.
Then to keep the sweet theme, it was off to Sugar Lounge opposite Manly Beach.
It’s a Beachy casual style lounge, with low casual seating and different table combinations to suit every taste.
The decor is Hawaiian (or Fiji) paradise, with a Manly beachside view.
We chose to do all the class here rather than our usual outside sketch beforehand.
It was warmer here and we could do interior sketches, or any vistas or vignettes around.
Everyone settled in, ordered coffee and lunch and happily sketched the way they saw the Sugar Lounge from where they were comfortably sitting.
Leonie is working on the Travel Journal idea and has included a small map in her sketches, and some words.
And nobody has nibbled the cakes. Tomorrow much of that will take place, and everyone else will see it here.
FRIDAY AUGUST 23 ’13
FRIDAY AUGUST 23 ’13
Just as Atsuko and I were arranging the cake still lifes, and placing the balloons, in walks Barbara the birthday girl.
My oh my was she surprised.
We’d planned all this of course. Atsuko had said she’d get balloons.
She chose great colours and carried 2 bunches of gas filled balloons on the bus!
The bus driver asked her if she was going to have a party on the bus.
‘We’ve been celebrating your big day all week’ we explained to Barb.
Smiles all round and as everyone arrived, more smiles and best wishes.
A small group today, but no less fun.
At least after our sketch today we could eat a slice of chocolate cake each.
Very nice it was too.
No I didn’t make it. I’m good at mixing colour but not ingredients!
Still a chilly day so we wrapped up warmly and headed for the sanctity of Sugar Lounge.
We took a front table we could all sit at, and the very helpful staff soon had our coffees under way.
interior sketches require just as much thinking about as outside ones.
What to put in, what to leave out.
We talked about that, and soon sketching silenced us all.
Very nice sharing plates of tasty foods arrived and everyone continued sketching,
No pressure, it’s nice to take the time to sketch when you have it.
No where to go, nowhere to be.
Sink right into that chair and let the world go by.
SATURDAY AUGUST 24 ’13
A glorious Manly Day. Sunshine and blue skies. Perfect for happy sketchers.
Alissa had kindly offered to talk again on her ideas of how to go about planning your Travel Sketching Journal.
This is sooooo helpful. When you want to record your life in sketches and words, it’s wonderful to get inspiration from someone who’s worked out what suits her.
Our sketches were of the cakes and balloons we’d been celebrating for Friday Barb’s 70th. However today we could sketch and eat everything. Not that that happened of course. We’re all trying to look good for summer!!
Alissa added her cake and balloon sketch to her today’s ferry ride page, and later there would be whatever took her fancy at Sugar Lounge. Here are Alissa’s sketches for today now on her website.
We had Susan from South Coast getting her sketching polished up for Fiji, and meeting the other sketchers.
Marina also joined us, keen to learn a little from Alissa as she travels often too.
Our regular Saturday people are just plain pleased she can come on their sketching day.
Vivianne popped in to give a hand to anyone needing help – and to help with cake gobbling.
All packed up and off to Sugar lounge.
What no room at the Inn!
Saturday breakfasts are really popular in this beachside neck of the woods, so who were all these folk sitting where we hoped to?
Just as we thought we’d go elsewhere, the lovely girl said she’d move some people to give us a big table further inside.
Fantastic, all of could sit together.
It was rather low lighting and we wondered how it would work for sketching. But we soon discovered your eyes adjust and you hardly think about it then.
That’s how sketching goes.
You sketch what and where you get a spot.
Good practice for our sketching at Sunset classes which will be in this kind of lighting one suspects. So another really enjoyable day in Sugar Lounge paradise. Great food and coffee just hit the spot. Thanks again Alissa.
