Sketching. Finding Your Eye Level

Eye level perspective is what we’ve worked on this week. The ‘P’ word can create a lot of fear in people.

OOOh I can’t do this. I never understood it. I can’t see how it goes down not up etc.

So it seems an excellent time to pop this into onto our program of learning – one week before we finish. And by taking it one step at a time, you begin to get the concept,  begin to understand how it works and even enjoy it!  It won’t happen overnight but it will happen!!!  Once you do, you have the key to getting your sketches working every time

We are using ‘The Cube’ as a fascinating exercise in the studio. Here we help sketchers to ‘see’ their eye level. Starting with getting everyone to do their ‘idea’ of a cube on the whiteboard, we could soon tell that we all have a stock version of a cube we can pull out. However we then put a real life cube on the table. Mmmm. Different story. Around the middle a ribbon which we place at your eye level. We positioned it there, then eye level at top and then bottom. On the 4th cube we’d show how windows, doors etc fit into the plan.

This followed through on our location sketch of ‘Whitehouse Flowers’, finding our eye level and which way everything went in relation to that, just as you did in the Studio. A bit tougher out here, but everyone stepped up to the mark.

Every student managed to get the concept and if they felt there was something not right, were able to work out what it was.

For some who were in class twice this week, the added bonus was, that if you messed up first time, you nailed it the second.

Being at the very quirky ‘The Shop Next Door’ and finding a seat where you could add your colour was a great finish to the class. Trendy surfers, Mums and strollers and loud beat and even louder conversation. We sketchers simply get down to work wherever we are.

Take a look at how the students went in the classes for this week.
