Sketching Week 5. Coffee, Vegemite and Balsamic as colour

It was Week 1 for our New Sketchers on Mondays who have delighted themselves and us with their first nature sketches. On location it was trees and colour, followed by the 5 min coffee sketch. Everyone is well on their way to being a confident sketcher already.

For our other classes we were high up in the sky.  Rooftops. That was our theme this week.  Our Studio exercise was to sketch a grid and place blocks on it, as the demo showed.  An interesting brain exercise indeed. If it’s going away it must be narrower. On the floor were some wood cubes. Real life sketch needed using the 2 pencil trick to help you get the angles.

Next stop, up 12 floors to the very top of a car parking building to look out over Manly. How yer knees? Just black and white for this and we’d be cross hatching to get lights and darks.

Now the fun begins. One colour only using coffee or similar to get your sepia look. We ended up in several cafes this week, smiling as we ordered our coffees, knowing we’d be using them as paint!!!.  A bit of innovation resulted in a wash of Vegemite, balsamic sauce and of course coffee. Sometimes all 3!

Some experimenting was needed to get the colour smooth and to layer in darks on top. Worked a treat and you could eat your sketch later as a midnight snack. A very fun way to treat a’ tough’ subject.
