Sketching Week 3 Term 3. Lines & poles

Lines of communication this week.

Seemed a good moment to bring in negative space. In other words, the space around the object which you don’t usually see.  But now we want to see it. It helps see the shape of the object you’re sketching.  It can take time to ‘get’ it but once you do it’s quite exciting. An excellent brain exercise.

We had a lovely old fashioned phone as a sketch where your negative space awareness would help you get the shapes working. We all remember our parents having phone like these. Sitting in the hallway at nights, chatting to friends for hours and hoping not to be overheard!

Then of course the location sketch was a telegraph pole with its tangle of wires and connections. Not what you’d think to sketch but so intriguing when you do. Here again, your negative spaces would help you ‘see’. A little triangle here, a diamond shape there.

Very useful once you feel more familiar with it. The newer sketchers were using w’colour pencil, and trying out a little water brush. Opps careful, you’ll have overpowering colour if you don’t hold back. Most regular sketchers work between that and watercolour. It’s a matter of convenience really. All look great anyway.
