Sydney.Sketching Week 9 Term 4. Feels Like Christmas

Really truly where does time go? Clearly we’ve been having far too much fun with our sketching to notice the week’s slipping by.

This was week 9 and a big one. This was a Christmas week and our Student Sketching Exhibition Opening. Such excitement.

A huge crowd of sketchers, friends and family gathered one evening to see the work and catch up with their classmates.

Bella Vista Gallery and Cafe is the perfect venue for us. Good clear wall space, plenty of room on the big outdoor balcony, and great staff serving beautiful food and matching wines.

We couldn’t be happier.

Somehow with all the excitement we still managed to sketch with our classes as well.

Wednesday New Sketchers were discovering fast people sketching. Quick shapes and people on the move. No time for getting detail, just the action.

Saturday New Sketchers were in their first watercolour lesson. Bright yellow sunflowers were the perfect subject. Actually a gift presented at the Opening, but perfect for their watercolour still life. In fact they were getting so keen they also did the Christmas tree as well.

For General classes it was trees. Christmas trees in fact.

The studio setup was a large decorated tree with ornaments which could be sketched quickly or in your own time. One class tried two quick tree sketches side by side, then using watercolour pencils in both hands at the same time – apply loose colour. Quite hilarious and a good brain exercise.

An avenue of Norfolk pines on North Steyne was our location subject.

Carefully observe the going away trunks and where they lead you.

Note that from front to back is quite shallow. Use your foreground trees to frame the sketch and let the colour wash out a little as it goes way down the avenue.

Well done everybody. What you’ve learnt will apply every time you have an avenue whether trees, columns or architecture.

Enjoy this week’s sketches.
