Week3 Term 2. Water & People

Our subjects this week. Sailing and backward people. Not ‘that’ backward – just people back on!

Different subjects indeed. For New Sketchers we’re beginning to look at composition in your still life and the sailing scene on location was a great place to start. Placing your shapes in a way to keep your focus on the page, rather than falling off.

Colours of the sea in watercolour pencil is the other mission this week. Keeping your colour round your subjects and leaving plenty of white space. A few ‘choppy chops’ – you know what they are! Remember we’re not not colouring in. This is simple colour application over a sketch.

We were doing people ‘back on’ and crowd scenes in our General classes. Some hilarious moments as each one modelled and sketched from behind. In some classes the tutor kindly modelled and changed with lots of props. We’d never have realised!!

Then off to the very busy Manly wharf where the ferry delivers a few hundred fast walking models for us every 30 minutes.

We now don’t get too concerned about people ‘moving’ as the next one will do the same thing. Observe observe. Look for the action or the line of the body.

Get it down loosely. Add a few others round your main figures and you have a crowd scene.

Good work everybody.
