EHS SYDNEY. Week 8 Term 4.
This week was time for a little anatomy for General classes. We were studying hands and feet. How do they really look? How do we sketch a simple version to complete our ‘people’ sketches?
So by taking a darn good look at our own, we could make a composite of lots of angles. Feet are particularly intriguing when you sketch looking down. You may not have thought about those things on the end of your legs as a sketch! Well today’s the day. This was also a chance to use toned paper and decorate with some coloured pens both light and dark. Suddenly hands and feet become very decorative.
New Sketchers were calling on their recollections of what a classic bicycle looks like. No looking at the real deal. Just sketch what you think. Not many of us get it all. However by bringing out our little model of a bike, we could have an aha moment and make any changes.
General classes then went out Christmas tree hunting. And by golly there they were all down the Corso. Australia of course has a hot sunny Christmas and no snow of any sort. Although you can buy it in a can!
New Sketchers found bicycles of all kinds near Manly Wharf. In bike racks. Tied to trees. Chained onto fences. Take your pick. A sketch showing a bicycle in a setting. Great work all. Our evening classes can get sketches and colour on before it gets dark now. It’s great. So take a look at our efforts this week. As always the tutors are feeling very proud of you all. Look at what you can do now.
To see more from our students, if you live in Sydney – do visit our Student Exhibition at Bella Vista Cafe and Gallery, North Head Manly. Almost 50 sketches are on show and an amazing variety shows us that sketching is a very personal thing. It’s yours so sketch as you feel. Everyone did. Congratulations.

EHS MELBOURNE Week 8 Term 4 ’16
Our warm up sketch this week was some of the lovely coloured fresh vegetables and fruit found in the markets. Our sketchers embraced their quick sketch and loose watercolours in speedy fashion. We are getting very confident now about working quickly.
It’s about page planning and putting it all together now -so our thumb nail sketches are a fabulous tool to see how to simplify and which way will we use our book.Everyone sketched the St Mary’s church gates with really great results and each student’s own unique styles showed in their different interpretations. Warm regards Jeanette
EHS AUCKLAND Week 7 Term 4 ’16
So this week we’ll show the Tuesday General sketchers (all are coming back next year I’m delighted to say 🙂
Our title this week was ‘stone of Ages’. These are old plaques or panels, put onto an early building by the original owners. Slabs of type with dates set in stone as signatures to imortalise the buildings owners or perhaps describing the the original use of the building – many of them around the turn of the century. Its an easy thing to overlook on an older building because it’s ’too hard’ or that trying to do type (words and numbers) is a hill too far. We attacked this head on – with some class time practicing – in this case on a silver cup that 2 of the students had won playing pairs representing Auckland at Bridge. Following this it was out into the street and some great results and now – typographers all! ! Cheers Tony
