Week9 Term4. Nature’s Bounty

Week 9 and what a gorgeous week for nature and colour. New Sketchers were looking at Intrinsic shape in fruit and veggies. General students were trying out the many ways of capturing the beauty of the bloom. Some gorgeous results.

TUESDAY GENERAL DEC 5 ’17

We almost turned the studio into a florist today. Lots of gorgeous blooms to inspire but first a review of watercolor techniques, layering washes, wet on wet, and aquarelles for definition. So many creative options and so lovely to have time explore and try new approaches. Lovely work. Toni.

THURSDAY GENERAL. DEC 7 ’17

Our challenge today was white magnolias. You all did so well to embrace a loose line sketch and then drop washes of green, blue and burnt sienna watercolour behind the gorgeous magnolia flowers to make them pop. What a statement. We then moved on to different flowers to find their characteristic shapes and practice layering vibrant colour. Really expressive sketches. I think we all left the studio with sunny smiles on our faces. Toni.

THURSDAY EVE GENERAL. DEC 7 ’17

Lets try flowers in quite different ways. Take away the safety net, and try at least 3 or 4 different ways with technique and colour.
You did so well. All fear put aside. Great works Thursday evers. Erin.

FRIDAY GENERAL. DEC 8 ’17

The flowers were glorious. But let’s try sketching first in chinagraph and paint over. Next twigs and ink. Maybe some newsprint with lots of big strokes of crayon. Then the twig and Ink sketch. Finally the plain air sketch with focussed colour.  No detail needed. Just colour, one over the other. Erin.

FRIDAY NEW. DEC 8 ’17

Intrinsic shapes and fresh fruit and veggies today. A trip to Manly Food Coop to give us that farmer’s market feel that we often find when traveling. Lovely to see your sketching and observation skills developing so quickly. Toni.

SATURDAY GENERAL. DEC 9 ’17

So many more beautiful flowers arriving today. We rival any florist display.
First up, chinagraph. Of course you can’t see it, but you will once the colour is applied. Next Twig and ink. Always a winner. Then crayon on newsprint. Wow so much fun. Down to the Sydney Rd Florist for a quick sketch and minimal colour. Erin.

THE ROCKS

FRIDAY NEW. DEC 8 ’17

Today we learnt about Intrinsic shapes of Fruit and Vegetables.
As there is no Vegetable or Fruit market in the Rocks. We stayed at the Tea Cosy and sketched the fruit and vegetables that I sourced. Thank you Sharon for the beautiful Dragon Fruit. It was much appreciated.
It was so captivating to note the shapes and colours of all the fruit and veges that we continued to sketch effortlessly.
All the fruits and veges came to life, with their colours dancing on the page.
Thank you ladies for such an enjoyable morning. Tammy.

Next week is the final in our Term 4 ’17 Travel Sketching courses. Do get in touch if you’d like to book a course in 2018.
