WEEK 1. TRAVEL SKETCHING IN PROVENCE.

You’ll be creating your own Travel Sketching journal right from the beginning. We’ll start with sketching everything around us each day, from sketching your room, even a floor plan, a simple map of where we’re going, what we ate, funny moments you noted and so on. We’ll start each morning with my foundation sketching techniques. This will enable you to take on any subject with confidence. You’ll be writing your own thoughts as we go along. All of this makes for a fun and very memorable Sketchbook. I’ll give you any ideas and help needed.

We stay in the delightful Hotel Villaglanum right in the heart of St Remy, Provence. Each bedroom is beautifully decorated and has it’s own bathroom. We are just a short walk to the centre of town so shopping and restaurants are easy for you to wander off to should the mood take you.

ABOUT PROVENCE.

Day 1. Welcome Champagne Reception.

We will pick you up at the Avignon train station at 3.30pm. Wait at the Relay Bookstore. Upon your arrival at our hotel  take time to settle in or explore the property. In the evening, you will enjoy a welcome reception followed by a gourmet dinner.

Day 2. Ochre village of Roussillon.

Roussillon, one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages, sits on top of the world’s biggest vein of ochre, the reddish pigment which has been used by artists for centuries. Sketch red houses, ochre trails, cafes, whatever inspires you.

You will also have time for shopping: don’t miss out on the unique reddish potteries.

Day 3. Most spectacular village in Provence. Gordes.

Gordes, also listed as one of France’s most beautiful villages, is the most spectacular village in Provence, perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse.

The view from the village is a southern panorama out across fields, vineyards and forests, and small-perched villages to the Montagne du Luberon.

Day 4. Market and Canals in ‘Isle sur la Sorgue’.

L’Isle sur la Sorgue is a real paradise for Travel Sketchers.

In the morning, we will shop the incredible and colourful market: colourful arrays of Provencal fabric, tablecloths, pottery, silk scarves, natural soaps with dozens of scents and of course lavender products.

Day 5. Sketching in the Village or at home.

Today will be a non driving day to allow even more time for sketching.

We will spend the day sketching either at the hotel or in the cute and non touristy village of Venasque: cobblestone streets, 18th century houses, flowers, doors,…

The view from the terrace of the hotel, on Mont Ventoux, the highest mountain in Provence, will take your breath away.

Day 6. On the trail of Van Gogh in St Remy de Provence.

We will sketch along the paths that Van Gogh used to walk the last years of his life.

This tour is an emotional trip through the wonderful landscapes, which inspired the great impressionists.

Day 7. The non touristy villages of Oppede-le-Vieux and Senanque.

Venasque is a non touristy jewel, not listed in travel books. While strolling the streets you will come to appreciate the quieteness and wonderful atmosphere that will seduce you, as it has dozens of artists.

With those interested, we will go to the famous Cistercian abbey of Senanque, a beautiful and still-working 12th century abbey, tucked into an isolated valley.

Day 8. Departure.

It is time to say: “au revoir” but not “adieu” because you will be back. We just know it.

After our last breakfast together, we’ll drive you to the Avignon train station by 9.30am.

Transportation.

You will be well taken care of from your pick up at the Avignon train station to your drop off at the end of your stay.

Every day, we will drive you in a comfortable A/C mini van to different painting locations.

Come and enjoy the freedom of travel sketching. Erin will guide you through the first stages  with my foundation sketching techniques .Before the week is over you’ll be sketching happily,

Our Sketch Holidays are perfect if you are on your own, or travelling with a friend or two. You’ll find the the bond of sketching means you already have lots in common with your new companions.

We meet at Pisa airport on the first day, at the cafe next to the main entrance, at 12 noon  We’ll be picked and driven the hour or so to our home for the rest of the week. We’ll be headed to the Garfagnana region and the hilltop village of Barga where we’ll stay at the beautiful farmhouse estate of our host. At the conclusion of the week, we’ll be back at Pisa airport or Lucca station by 10.00 am.

Chris is a very established exhibiting painter, and with his wife Krysia, will be our hosts for the time we are residing there. They have lived for many years in Italy and have all the knowledge of locals. Chris will be taking us to the many wonderful and seemingly undiscovered sketching locations around this part of Tuscany.

Each morning there’ll be an enticing continental breakfast which we can have out on the terrace by the pool, or in the dining room.

We have a still life setup in the Studio each morning, where Chris and I will explain what we will achieve today, then we’ll take off for one of the many locations we’ll be discovering.

We’ll sketch, eat and explore (shop)  and fill your Sketchbook with the stories of your adventures.

This will be my fifth visit here to Barga, and I cannot wait to show you these fascinating hilltop villages with their ancient churches, the village houses, the cafes and bistros, and rolling hills disappearing across the valley towards  the distant hills – and more hilltop villages.

Every day we’ll go to a new location, and sketch the scenes which grab your attention at every turn.

On one of the days we’ll take a train to Lucca and sketch there for the day.

We’ll eat at local cafes around the region and try the wines of the area. The food is regional and prepared from whatever is in season every day. Classic Italian dishes from old family recipes handed down.

There is internet, though being high in the hills, certain spots around the property work better than others.

As you’ll discover, sketching can become a passion, and your journal of sketches will be a life long memory.
