My mission is to teach people to sketch, who had no idea they could and to change their world.

A little about me.
Travel Sketching has been my particular passion for more than two decades. Art has been my single focus since early childhood.

During my career as an Advertising Art Director and illustrator I added the skills needed to simplify a visual story in a limited time, with as few strokes as possible. I was sketching without knowing (and won some awards).
Family and a 4 year sabbatical at Julian Ashton School of Art, a highly respected classic fine Art School in Sydney Australia followed. I became a gallery owner, creating and selling my own oils and watercolours.
(See more below)

My love of form and simplicity never left me.
The day came when I decided to sketch instead of “paint” - using loose imaginative line and simple colour - and to travel the world showing others how to do the same. Quicker, spontaneous joyful art-making. I loved it!
And so do a growing number of EHS pupils world-wide, it seems.

It's probably 15+ years ago that I began teaching Travel Sketching in my Manly Studio in Sydney Australia.
It's hard to believe that nobody knew much about sketching.
People did painting or pottery classes but what I was doing - that fast loose scribble with bright colour sloshed on - was very new to people - and they loved it.

I couldn't even find books on it, apart from how to draw a horse.
But luckily people like Danny Gregory who published the first books on sketching, which I snapped up, and Gabriel Campanario who began the Urban Sketchers global movement, entered the sketch world.
It all seemed to happen in a whirl so I had inspiration galore to show our students.
My own variation is Travel Sketching which is quick and done in the time you have with a minimal colour palette, rather than just sketching which can be without a time limit.

Classes grew and we have tutors trained in the EHS system taking Classes Workshops and Tours at all levels.
It's important to me that myself and my tutors share this vital knowledge as far and widely as possible. It really does change people's worlds and we certainly need that these days.

In Kingscliff Australia where I reside part of the year, I love our twice weekly Travel Sketching courses and going somewhere quite different on each of the 6 weeks. It feels like traveling and discovering without leaving the country.

In France where I live my French life for a few months, I absolutely adore being there in our 200yr old stone cottage,
walking among the vines, the classic foods and markets, the smiling locals and of course teaching classes in my Studio or taking 7 Day South of France Tours.

London and UK are a hop step and jump from South of France,
so I get to do a 5Day London Workshop when the weather is at it's best.

In the USA we have an adorable family.
Best reason to spend time in Natick near Boston taking classes and Workshops, eating ice cream at Tatte Bakery & Cafe, with the little one, and  being part of the local creative community.
It's New England so quite a different range of sketch subjects to France UK or Australia.

If you'd like to know more about any of the above, just do get in touch.
Nowadays we have trained passionate EHS sketch tutors, using my teaching platform, in Australia and New Zealand.
If you’d be interested in becoming an Erin Hill licenced tutor please get in touch.

Below is a small selection from my hundreds of sketches and you’ll see the huge variety of subjects we cover.
You’ll learn to sketch your own story and enjoy telling it with your pen and colours.

Happy Sketching
Erin

You won’t believe how much pleasure you’ll get from sketching. Absolutely no experience needed. Truly.
